If you only knew. The list of great universities and colleges in Ohio is extensive! We have a propensity of phenomenal engineering and CS programs in our area. To name a few: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, The Ohio State University, University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, University of Toledo, University of Michigan, Wright State University, and Carnegie Mellon University.
Now you know!
The Hard Part
I founded a group about 10 years ago, called ‘Firmware Engineers of Northeast Ohio’ We have 200 members from 70 area companies. If you only knew how many technology companies are in Cleveland/Akron you would be amazed. I am amazed. ABB, Eaton, GE Lighting, Philips Medical, Moen, Vitamix, GOJO, Genie Overhead Door, Nordson, Cleveland Clinic (lots of tech coming out of the Clinic), Rockwell Automation, Lincoln Electric, Steris, NASA, Medtronic, Goodyear, Parker Hannifin, Invacare, to name a few.
So what’s the hard part? In my group, representing all these companies, and all these engineers, nearly all of them are local folks, coming out of the universities I mentioned. When folks leaving the west think of places to go, Ohio isn’t the first place that comes to mind. We need to find ways to keep our new talent here in our region, but we also need to find ways to attract new talent from other parts of the region as well as mid-career and senior talent.
The Rust Belt will become the new Tech Belt
The demand is high, the university output is some of the best in the country. Oh did I forget? Inc magazine just published an article on this. They agree. Let’s end if there.
